Debate #3- Reputation

Reputation is on the line today for the Drunken Lancers, and its one of the most crucial factors in the game.

Events begin with the usual disarray..

Session Start: Thu Jan 18 20:40:04 2004
*** Now talking in #theeverexpandingbar
*** Theo changes topic to 'Reputation'
"** Joins: Steve

Theo: punctual steve, punctual.
Steve: It took every ounce of my strength.
Theo: haha i bet
Theo: so, what do you think about this session, hour max?
Steve: hour max yes
Steve: I read the other debates, you edited out my speech about space pirates.
*** Joins: Chillay
Theo: yeah im thinking of cutting it into debate #4 if and when it gets done
*** Joins: choiceofweapon
choiceofweapon: raorr
choiceofweapon: hail to the king baby
Theo: most excellent greetings, bros.
Chillay: salutations, my most excellent compadres.
choiceofweapon: hah
Steve: hohoho! I'm early
Chillay: STEVE way to go
choiceofweapon: steeeev
Theo: small crowd today
Steve: yep
Chillay: rep should be the biggest topic
choiceofweapon: everyones playing less anyway
Steve: Yeah.
Chillay: good to see you here for the duration steve
choiceofweapon: lets start it up already
Steve: I was expecting you guys to say something like "STAAEEVVEVEGEDMDLDGDSGffhfjgfg!!!111"
Theo: HAHAHA
Chillay: rofl nono
Steve: brb

...and the debate is almost nowhere to be seen..

*** Joins: Gunbraarr
Chillay: Okay so the deal is reputation
Chillay: aha
Theo: the beard arrives
Gunbraarr: whats brewing in ere then
Theo: reputation debate
choiceofweapon: ello Gun
Gunbraarr: arr choice
choiceofweapon: arrr
Theo: so.. everytime you attack or kill something then you affect the reputation of whatever faction it belongs to..
Gunbraarr: go on
Chillay: The reputation screen shows each faction you;ve encounter aswell as what their friends and allies are
Theo: right and attacking someone will annoy their friends and please their enemies
choiceofweapon: simple, attacking someone makes their faction mad at you and their friends less mad at you but still mad
Theo: gun, you got anything to add?
Chillay: THATS simple?
Gunbraarr: I'm taken aback by the vast wealth of knowledge abound in this very room
choiceofweapon: simpler than their tries
Theo: the mighty bearded one makes his debut in the world of sarcasm
Chillay: how about we go throgh what we like to do at the start of the game to get our reputations how we want them?
Steve: what did i miss
Theo: nothing, we've only just started
Steve: Haha

...a brief intermission..

Gunbraarr: OK so I guess a bad rep would be one that gets in the way of how you want to play the game
Chillay: yeah thats a good way of putting it
Theo: right and fixing your rep can have unwanted results if you don't pay attention to who is friends with who.
choiceofweapon: making everyone hate you is hard almost everyone has enemies who like it when you kill them
Steve: Arr! gunbearrrd
Gunbraarr: arrrr steevarr
Chillay: reputation is handy with trade routes and stuff like that. pirates dont attack you if they like you.
Theo: storager depots are the fastest way to alter reputation but its risky business at the start cos of how heavily attacked you get.
Chillay: only hostile things attack you, as long as everyone else is safely in the neutral, its fine
Steve: I love having a neutral reputation with pirates.
choiceofweapon: yeah you got to watch it when you have Neutrals that are almost hostile becayse then if you mess up they hate you and you cant dock at their stations
Theo: yep.. so now we have Reputation important in Trading and Docking, what else?
choiceofweapon: GUNS
Gunbraarr: equipment
Theo: right, the better your reputation is with a faction, the more access you have to their higher quality weapons.
Steve: includes shields too i think
Steve: brb
Theo: hm i dunno about that
Theo: ok
choiceofweapon: and having a bad reputation with someone means you cant get their good weapons and equip
Chillay: and missions, if a faction hates you they wont offer you missions
Theo: yeah and dont forget even if theyre still Neutral it all depends on how far the bar is toward Hostile or Friendly
Gunbraarr: aye I raided a few storage depots in rheinland and after that four factions hated me at once and i couldnt land anywhere
Chillay: haha
Gunbraarr: I forgot to check what factions were almost at hostile, lesson learnt eh.
choiceofweapon: why did you want to land anyway, rhein is poop.
Theo: haha choice, im telling rhodan
Chillay: uh oh choice you done it now
choiceofweapon: nooo man i take it back last time he stalked me for like two yeares
Gunbraarr: f&8king hate it when he does that
Theo: language language mister beard
Gunbraarr: apologies, but sometimes rhodan=knobfest
Chillay: lol thats a beautiful equation
Theo: hehe
Gunbraarr: I wanted to land cos I found some good places to sell stuff at a high price
choiceofweapon: I know so many trade routes and jumpholes man
Chillay: finding out the hard way is more rewarding than downloading a list off a site or something.
choiceofweapon: no man i learnt the hard way then got bored whats the point playing when youre bored
Chillay: at least trade them for info rather than just download a cheat sheet
Theo: guys on topic please, lets summarize
choiceofweapon: lol chillay is on my case
Gunbraarr: trying to think of what other treputation disasters ive been involved in hehe

Finally, on to the summaries!

Theo: Question: so after all is said and done, what does reputation do and how do we make it work for us?
Gunbraarr: Answer: I havn't a f&8king clue
choiceofweapon: lol
Theo: grr cmaan summaries ye filthy beggar
Gunbraarr: hehe ok give us a min
Chillay: coming up
Theo: sure go ahead
Steve
: Well for me, reputation helps keep pirates off my back. I basically trade until Ii have enough money to bribe, or I attack some storage depots I know to be carrying good quality merchandise, then that fixes my rep nicely and away I go.
choiceofweapon: attack storage depots as soon as you can and itll set you up with everyone practically neutral so you can build up your rep how you like it. haha hows that.
Theo: splendid.
choiceofweapon: wait steve you actually ATTACK things in this game>?
Steve: Yep, when im trading from a regular station I ally with the station's faction and then its enemies are fair game.
Chillay: may i be the first to say way to go steve
Theo: hehe
Gunbraarr: Rep helps me get on the good side of factions i want to do business with, that way i get the best weapons and the best missions. Also, being neutral with the police makes all the difference.
choiceofweapon: yeah neutral with bounty hunters and police for as long as possible otherwise its tough going
Chillay: Check your Reputation screen after a handful of battles to see how its affected and you'll soon pick up how the whole thing works. Pick your targets carefully and make sure who their allies are, otherwise you might end up making enemies with a whole lot more than you intended. Above all, make sure that you read bribes carefully, because some of them make factions really hate you, and its harder to get a good rep than it is to get a bad one.
choiceofweapon: bloody hell chil
Theo: lol ok good stuff, thats going up.
Theo: a tip i'd give is to take missions - the bigger the better - because they improve rep much quicker than just killing faction peeps, although not as quick as storage depots.
Gunbraarr: arrr bloody missions
Theo: thats all for now
Theo: cheers you orrible lot.
choiceofweapon: woot
** Quits: choiceofweapon
Chillay: catch you after
Gunbraarr: I will one day finish the pirates guide
Theo: aye
Theo: haha beard no worries
Gunbraarr: cheers then chums.
Chillay: arrr
Theo: arrr
** Quits: Gunbraarr

Theo: haha its the two of us again
Steve: same ol moon same ol sky
Theo: hahaha makes cambodia look like kansas
Steve: I thought it was Kambodia with a K?
Theo: hm i think it depends what side of the pond you're on
Steve: predator is a classic
Theo: they did the same thing to jim hopper..
Theo: aye it is
Steve: hahaha
Steve: hey sweet this took an hour on the nose
Theo: hour max just like we said
