Gunbeard: okay, so give me an idea of what you like and dont like about player pirates in Freelancer, and the choices involved when you choose to be a pirate or a bounty hunter/anti-pirate, and the moral implications this can have.. ok? Badchoice: that gave me a headache chilli: I like beard's idea of honorable piracy. Knuckles: waitim still reading it Gunbeard: go on, chilli chilli: well you've got to be straightforward about being a pirate, but you have to have a code of honor if you're going to be respected. respect is a big step towards being a good pirate. Gunbeard: that's right, being a pirate and being a player-killer are two different things, if you show people you are a reasonable player who is not completely unfair, you can get better results and even get regular taxpayers. Badchoice: no man lots of server rules say a pirate is a player killer who can tax Knuckles: if you just torch the life out of them every time they see you and they keep coming back, its their own fault. once they realize as soon as they see you they are going to get toasted, they will listen to your demands and pay up. chilli: thats what makes you guys dishonorable pirates, its not as simple as good or bad, you can mix and match to get the results you want, right? Badchoice: right i guess, but i prefer shoot first demand stuff later, cos otherwise they wont know if your capable of doing them damage or not. Knuckles: yeah thats what i mean, you have to send a message you mean business Gunbeard: I prefer to wait and see what they do next. It's more fun to punish someone who doesnt believe you than it is to straight away blow them up and start a war when you could have started a mutual agreement. chilli: ive seen it work man, hes only had a few payback hunts out of about twenty new taxpayers, and none of them lasted more than a day. Gunbeard: right and sometimes id just be able to talk my way out of trouble instead of getting a whole bunch of kids with grudges trying to pin me in one system. Gunbeard: Well my wrinkly old chum, if you think about it, Freelancer is all about freedom to choose what you want to do, so being a pirate is a legitimate choice, and degrees of behavior convey degrees of honor, so if you hunt down pirates mercilessly, you are essentially prejudicing every pirate as having done something to deserve destruction apart from choose a role. chilli: haha, youre giving knuckles brain damage Knuckles: auuugh again with the reading hugeness Rhodan: Yes it is a choice, but my choice in dealing with pirates without mercy counteracts the pirates who deal with players without mercy, I am the balance to the force. Gunbeard: aye, i get what youre saying, but don't you think that as a good guy you have a greater responsibility to show understanding and - you know - GOODNESS to pirates who might actually have honor and might cooperate at being restricted to certain systems or taxed if theyre spotted by you? Rhodan: That has been attempted, but the degree of treachery and dishonesty amongst pirates has brought me to cement my reputation as a no-mercy pirate killer. chilli: lol, methinks our guy has been hurt in the past Gunbeard: Well a certain someone left the mighty to pursue a career in piracy.. Gunbeard: why sir, don't mind if i do :} Gunbeard: There is an art to piracy, you can be a charmer and then folks will deal with it better. The more you make yourself part of the whole atmosphere the more readily theyll hand over the cargo. Badchoice: but there are always players who will just quit out of the server or not care if theyre blown up, or just go to war with you or something. Gunbeard: yes but youve got to present an argument, cos you're just playing a role. If you're gonna be a pirate that picks on players, you might as well get in character and do it properly, otherwise you'd just be running trade, which would net you more money anyways. Rhodan: Most players aren't in character and are just trying to enjoy the game, so when you kill them you're wasting their time and effort, which is completely wrong. Gunbeard: Look I know that some poor beggar has toiled for fifteen minutes on a trade route and been lane hacked a dozen times and then i come along and demand his cargo, but im only buggering around in a Wolfhound or something similar, so im only asking for about forty units out of one or two hundred. chilli: ive done that myself a few times with choice, we hung around new tokyo, robbing people on the diamond run. wasnt that successful really cos once they knew about us they took really long pain-in-the-ass detours, and i wouldnt wish that kind of boredom on anyone. Badchoice: oh man, the old days Gunbeard: aye if you get that reputation theyll even start talking about you on the forums Badchoice: yeah forum threads on pirates, haha. and flames against pirate posters whove robbed people before, thats always fun. Rhodan: I rely on my reputation to strike fear into the hearts of pirates throughout Sirius and the server forums. Knuckles: oh geez. Gunbeard: ANYWAY.. roleplaying a pirate is really enjoyable cos once you get in the role you find you have a reputation with REAL players, and thats very rewarding, because its not just the AI that you have to look out for, every time you see a player up on your Important Contacts List, you're thinking 'wonder if they know about gunbeard' and when they say 'ah sh%t' then you know they know and you go 'arrrr hand it over, forty units, no more, no less.' Badchoice: aw yeah reminds me of the NRA in Kusari chilli: lol.. good times. oh and some insane times too, like the Kyushu convoy on that cloud run to Hokkaido. Gunbeard: so. its great when you have a big reputation as an honorable pirate because then you can start a whole debate about whether pirates in the server should be allowed to mess up big trade runs. I think its great, you can hijack an entire trade run, and i've done that on entire servers. It's just great. chilli: so what im getting from you is that its great? Its a great role to play because its exciting and challenging and you dont have to look around for trouble, because trouble looks for you instead. oh and knuckles stfu. chilli: awesome. good job, choice.
