Debate #5- Starting out in Multiplayer 2

The first debate was a mess because most of the Lancers were only "seasoned beginners", but after two years of Freelancer, what do they think now?
So, knowing what they know now, we ask them.. What the heck do you do when you start with a starflier and 2000 credits?

The Debate Begins..

Chill: why mending my slacker ways, of course
choiceofwomen: notice anything about my name
Gunbeard: no.
Chill: nope
*** Joins: Nukkles
Nukkles: ello-har
Nukkles: lol chilli is admin
Gunbeard: Alright folks, starting out in multiplayer, whats the best thing to do and why, go ahead let's start this up.
Nukkles: lol choices name

For once, we start off quickly & quietly..

Gunbeard: First up, please welcome back steve from the depths of freelancer exile..
Steve: lo there chaps
choiceofwomen: STEEVE.. EEVE.. EEV.. EVE
Chill: I knew youd be back, steve.
Gunbeard:
say something rhodan!
Rhodan: Steven and I have already talked, I am waiting for the debate.
choiceofwomen: ..
Steve: still the shining light of happiness are we, Rhodan?
Chill: lol. missed you steve.
choiceofwomen: STAEVES!>11
Chill: STEEBZX!2123456
choiceofwomen: lol
Gunbeard: f^%cking get on with it or i'll swap your text with rhodan's for the site.
choiceofwomen: noooo okok i behave
Chill: hehe, well starting out with two grand and a starflier.. first thing i'd do is sell the justice mk1s and nanobots, then i'd have enough to buy three lavablade mk2s.
Rhodan: A sound purchase, although that would leave you with no credits.
Chill: it would leave me with 320 creds, which i buy another shield battery with and then go looking for a good mission, see?
Rhodan: I suppose, but missions aren't very high paying in Manhattan.
choiceofwomen: geez chilli i usually just buy another justice and hit the storage depots around manhatten or fort bush, then hit the lanes after ive upgraded my weapons or maybe bought a patriot or something.
Chill: I dont need a high paying mission, just one above 2700 or so, that way i can afford a Rhino when i get back, then i hit the storage depots or run some cargo.
Nukkles: omg chilli in a rhino?
Steve: Rhino! love the little flying bus.
Chill: yes, and i get rich quick that way, sonny, so i can get me a better ship.
Nukkles: lol ok..
choiceofwomen: i know, knuck, it is shameful to see him in a flying brick
Chill: shameful to see choice getting his a$$ handed to him by police after raided the storage depots in a starflier with weak lasers.
Steve: I suppose it looks a bit like a brick.. how about a lego bus?
Gunbeard: lol
choiceofwomen: haha chilli no way, i make sure i get away, use engine kill and drift looking back at them as theyre chasing and they wont follow you.
Chill: thats not what happened that one time..
Nukkles: lol.. do tell.
choiceofwomen: no dont tell, debate topic! lol a$$.
Gunbeard: sadly, it will have to wait.. talk about starting out, scum.
Nukkles: ill find out later anyway

At least I THOUGHT it would be quiet..

Chill: lol.. so anyway, i start by selling my weps and nanos and buying lavablades, then picking a 3k mission and buying a rhino, then hitting depots or running cargo, depending on whats available.
Gunbeard: then?
Chill: buy a drake and hit more depots up in Kusari and the Taus, then go buy pirate weapons with my newly adjusted rep sheet :)
choiceofwomen: mm.. pyros type 3!
Chill: yes, then i head down to the omegas, hitting some depots in Bretonia on the way, and buy Borroco from the Corsairs in the Omega systems. Ideal set up for a Drake, and i can take on VHF players and missions and get the big bucks.
Gunbeard: nice, that one has been handed around us drunks for a while, thanks for sharing it with the world, wiseguy.
Chill: dude, its about time we did!
Gunbeard: Okay anyone else?
choiceofwomen: yeah, I do missions sometimes just to get quick money, then i buy a patriot and hit storage depots or trade lanes looking for transports.
Gunbeard: Do you ride the lane for a bit before escaping out, or do you just hit the lane with the cops right there?
choiceofwomen: i ride it out about 1 lane length then esc key out of the lane and shoot it. geez why would i hit it with cops there.
Gunbeard: well the readers have to know this, they might be beginners.
Chill: explain yerself sonny!
Nukkles: hitting lanes gets boring at first because the higher level you are, the more stuff the computer drops.
Gunbeard: A rare gem of wisdom from Knuckles.. yes, when you destroy AI ships, they drop more cargo if you're a higher level.
Nukkles: thats what i said
choiceofwomen: i dont care really, its still fun to raid convoys and sell whatever you can get

A short interlude later..

choiceofwomen: when i do missions, i choose assassination, arrest, retrieval or destroy-station-without-destroying-anything-else ones.. those are usually the easiest and you can just go in and out quick and you don't have to eliminate all the bad guys, just the targets.
Chill: see, underneath the cretin is a seasoned veteran
Nukkles: hey that rhymes
choiceofwomen: underneath the chilli is a f^%cking idiotilli
choiceofwomen: oh hey that rhymes
Chill: lol
Nukkles: idiotilli isnt a word
choiceofwomen: ..
Steve: haha seriously you guys are on drugs.
Nukkles: anyway i go to detroit and hit xenos then come back to manhattan and hit depots, bother the cops, anything to get the rep i need so i can buy a defender or bloodhound and rip sh#t up.
Chill: dude, better deal if you buy a Dagger, theyre only a bit more expensive, 17000 for dagger vs 12000 for the other two.
Nukkles: bleh, dagger is choices i dont like flying it, like wearing someone elses shoes
Chill: lol thats a great way to put it.
choiceofwomen: and i wuldnt be seen dead in a defender
Nukkles: thats because thered be nothing left to see
, you cant handle it
choiceofwomen: hohoho like id want to handle a flying chicken wing
Chill: lol
Gunbeard: Alright scum, its degenerated.. Rhodan, go ahead and save our sanity with some insight.
Rhodan: I thought you'd never ask.
Gunbeard: you give up too easily.
Rhodan: Indeed. Anyway, I start with a starflier and sell my weapons, buying two lavablades and keeping the rest of my capital for later. I then do assassination, arrest or retrieval/destroy cargo missions until I have enough credits to purchase a better ship.
Gunbeard: alright so what ship and and what then?
Rhodan: Well, as Rheinland ships are highly prized, they are highly priced, so I opt for a Defender and move out to Texas and Bering to do more expensive missions. Once I have enough for a Barracuda, I buy one and do missions in and around Rheinland until I can afford a Banshee, then the same until I upgrade to a Valkyrie.
choiceofwomen: lol valkyrie is an upgrade? Falcon is way better unless you plan on fighting AI the whole time.
Rhodan: I choose Rheinland ships because they have very strong hulls and an unmistakeable, unforgettable presence.
Chill: yep, Falcon is roughly the same price as a Valkyrie with a bit more hull strength and much better turn rate.
Gunbeard: told you sticking to Rheinland ships would be your undoing.
Rhodan: I will face destruction without flinching so long as I continue the immortal message of death to all criminals.
choiceofwomen: DRAMA!
Chill: INTRIGUE!
Gunbeard: SUSPENDERS!
Steve: MOZZARELLA!!!
Nukkles: whut?
choiceofwomen: lol steeeeve and his cheese
Gunbeard: alright, lets let the rest of us have a go at some advice for starting out..
Steve: But I love my cheeses.. ;_;

Onwards and inexorably downwards..

Gunbeard: okay, so steve is up next, then me, then we summarize, alright?
Nukkles: okie
Chill: jes senor
Steve: right well I do missions with whatever I can slap together, usually selling the justices, nanos, buying three lavablades just like chilli does, then doing a good mission and getting a Rhino.
Steve: *typing break*
choiceofwomen: what?
Steve: need a quick break, I'm on AIM with the mrs too.
Gunbeard: lol its alright steve in your own time.
Chill: dude, this is no time for cyber..
Nukkles: LOL
Steve: So I run cargo (shut up you guys!) on short routes, usually with some escorts if I know anyone in the server, then I guess I could go one of three different ways, 1. start misbehaving and get Neutral by hitting depots and transports, 2. bribe my way into being Neutral with lane hackers so I can buy the Dromedary.. or 3. forget the Dromedary and just stay good, upgrading freighters whenever I can, and just basically keeping out of trouble.
choiceofwomen: LAdies and gentlement the most boring existence in the whole entire universe, i give you steve.
Chill: steve, sounds good man, i prefer options 1 or 3, bribing messes up your rep if you ever want to fine-tune it.
Gunbeard: alright my turn.. natter amongst yourselves while i orchestrate a masterpiece.
Nukkles: headache guys im out, thanks for debate and the craps and the shizzle etc
*** Quits: Nukkles
choiceofwomen: lol too much reading i think
choiceofwomen: is he ok?
Chill: no worries, maybe hes dyslexic?
Rhodan: He is impatient and unable to read as fast as he thinks.
Steve: Psychology major, right there.
Gunbeard: When I start out, the main idea is to get enough money to buy a Rhino or Patriot. Rhino lets me trade in cargo and do boring trade runs but for big bucks.. letting me get a ship nice and easy.. maybe TOO easy. Patriot lets me do missions and get money as well as combat experience, but the problem is my reputation gets worse with pirates so its harder to fix when you need to.
Chill: al-riight, the beard sounds good so far.
Gunbeard: Ideally, buying a Rhino then hitting storage depots and selling the profits, generally being a NPC pirate and getting money that way, is the best way to do it because it combines the big bucks cargo selling of a freighter with the excitement of battle, but you have to be able to make a good getaway, use engine kill drifting and quick trade lane docking and you'll be fine.
Gunbeard: there, hows that?
choiceofwomen: long winded but you heart is in the right place
Steve: We have similar styles, Gun, only you are on the other side of the fence hehe.
Gunbeard: A white picket fence? :)
Steve: No, electric barbed wire, you filthy criminal.
Gunbeard: lol.. go chew on your cardigan while you solve the sunday crossword.
Steve: haha
Chill: alright summary time!
Gunbeard: oy! that's my line.

Alright so we summarize already, geez..

Gunbeard: Okay, I sortof accidentally summarized previously, so here it is cut down to size..
Gunbeard: I prefer to buy a Rhino and combine hitting storage depots with hitting transports in the trade lanes, you can scoop large amounts of cargo and have fun doing it too, so long as you know engine kill drifting and how to work your reputation.
Chill: I like running a few boring trades with a Rhino and using the huge profits to buy a better ship. If i'm not in the mood to sit in lanes for hours, I will buy a patriot and run missions until I can upgrade. Tadahh.
Rhodan: My primary purpose is to do missions and help the people of Sirius, so I stick to that role and do not earn through trade or salvage. This focuses my purpose and prolongs the enjoyment of my time in the server.
choiceofwomen: I like to have some fun by just wreaking havoc on the NPCs until my reputation looks a little better, then basically doing pirate missions once ive hit enough storage depots or transports to fix up my rep. Pirates are usually way more dangerous than police, so youd much rather be fighting cops than pirates, plus cops wont lane hack you ever.
Gunbeard: nice work, steve next..
Steve: Working up the freighter ladder is the way to go, you get the biggest cash profits as long as you stay in one piece and know your routes, including short cuts and detours to avoid pirates. Start small and work up to the big stuff, patience always pays off here.
Gunbeard: and no summary from knuckles because he has a headache/is an a$$, you choose.
*** Quits: choiceofwomen
Gunbeard: thanks chaps, catch you on the flipside, chilli, you have the conn.
Chill: tata to the beard
Rhodan: It has been pleasurable.
*** Quits: Rhodan
*** Quits: Gunbeard
Chill: al-riiight chilli in charge hehe
Steve: nobody hangs around at the end anymore
Chill: yeh, busy lives steve.
Steve: bleh
