How to navigate outside of the trade lane network

Speed Tactics
Learn how to get in and out of lanes quickly and safely, or just skip to the Important Points.

Quick Docking
Get very close to a gate, docking ring or trade lane before you dock with it. Practice this as it saves you time and can save your life if you're being chased.

Using Cruise
If you are further than 2K from a lane, gate or docking ring, it's quicker to cruise there than use afterburners. Remember to get very close before you dock, so you save time.

Trade Lane Disrupted
Lanes run on shield energy, so your weapons will do shield damage to them. When a lane is disabled it cannot be used for around thirty seconds.

If you find yourself lane hacked by pirates, you'll have to fight them or evade them until the next lane recharges.

Lane Hacking
When you have disabled a lane, anything travelling along it will be ejected about 2K from the trade lane. Most computer opponents will try and re-dock with the trade lane as soon as it charges up, so make sure that you disable it again, unless you want them to get away.

Important Points
Get as close as you can to Gates and Lanes before docking with them to speed up the time it takes to go through.

Distances closer than 2K can be reached quicker by afterburner than by cruise.

Distances greater than 2K can be reached quicker by cruising, even with the charge-up time.

Trade lanes take about 30 seconds to recharge, cruising to the next lane will take longer than waiting.

You can exit a trade lane at any time by pressing the Escape key.
