Advanced Combat
Learn the benefits of Thrusters, Engine Kill and Reverse thrust turning, or skip to the summary points!

Hit the Afterburner!
Thrusters boost your ship speed up to 199m/s, not as fast as Cruise Speed (299m/s) but fast enough to outrun mines and missiles. Thrusters, or Afterburners, are lifesavers in combat, allowing you to move quickly and either attack or evade the enemy.

LovableRogue: "Never underestimate engine kill and drifting. Practice advanced combat moves as much as you can against invisible opponents if you have to, although live ones are infinitely better for your overall improvement as a fighter."

Killing your Engines and Drifting
Engine Kill (Z key) cuts off your engine, allowing you to drift and maneuver using the strafe and thruster keys. If you push accelerate or decelerate (forward or brake), you will start the engines up again, so be careful.

Strafing while the engines are killed reduces your speed, so use thruster in combination with strafing if you don't want to slow down.

If you are afterburning and want to kill your engines, be sure to press engine kill just before you let go of the thruster key, leaving you drifting at 199m/s.. nice.

Rhodan: "Jousting is when two opponents charge directly at each other and attack, then turn around and repeat. This is the essence of engine kill & drift fighting."

Handbrake Turns
Using reverse thrust (X key) slows you into reverse, allowing you to turn tighter. This is useful when you are turning to attack an enemy, as if you face them before they face you, you have longer to damage them.

Summary Points
Afterburners are good for evading mines and missiles, as well as moving faster and making you harder to hit.

Engine kill allows you to turn while drifting in the direction and speed you were going when you killed the engines. This lets you use your ship like a turret to attack a different direction.

Reverse thrust turns allow tighter turning circles, letting you face your enemy quicker and reducing the time they have to get away from you.
